Sprain wrist injury: symptoms and care

Short answer
A wrist sprain is an injury to one or more supporting ligaments, causing pain or limited movement after a twist, fall, or forceful load.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical mechanism
- Fall, twist, or forceful load
- May affect
- Pain, grip, rotation, and wrist movement
Recognising the injury
Wrist ligaments stabilise the small bones and guide movement. A sprain may cause local tenderness, aching, stiffness, bruising, or pain when gripping, pushing, or rotating the forearm. Symptoms can be mild or quite limiting. A fall can also injure a bone or cartilage, and these problems may resemble a sprain. Persistent pain on the thumb side deserves particular attention because several structures can be involved there.
Early care and recovery
Pause activities that increase pain, especially lifting and twisting. Rest the hand in a comfortable position and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if it helps. A clinician may suggest [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) while painful movement settles. Keep the fingers moving gently unless that worsens symptoms. When daily use becomes easier, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can guide mobility, grip work, and a gradual return to loading. [Kinesiology Taping](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/kinesiology-taping/) may complement support for some injuries.
When an examination matters
Get prompt care for a visibly deformed wrist, severe pain, marked loss of movement, or inability to grip or use the hand after an injury. Urgent assessment is needed for numbness, new weakness, pale or blue fingers, or an open wound. Arrange review if symptoms are not steadily improving, because a fracture or more substantial ligament injury may need different management.
Questions to bring
Ask which ligament or structure is involved, whether imaging is appropriate, and how long to use a splint. Also ask which exercises, work tasks, and sport movements are safe at each stage.

Questions people ask
How is a wrist sprain diagnosed?
A clinician considers the injury mechanism, tenderness, movement, strength, and nerve or circulation findings; imaging may be considered when a fracture is possible.
When can I return to sport?
Return when everyday movement and progressive loading are comfortable, with strength and control close to the uninjured side.
