Random spotting after your period: what to know

A small amount of blood after menstruation can occur when the lining is still settling, when ovulation changes hormone levels, or after starting, stopping, missing, or changing contraception. Sex-related irritation and infections such as Chlamydia can also cause spotting. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can present with abnormal bleeding. Endometrial Polyps and Uterine Fibroids may contribute to bleeding from the uterus. Pregnancy should be considered when possible, particularly if the next period is late.

Random timing does not identify the cause by itself. Repeated episodes, increasing flow, bleeding after sex, pain, discharge, or bleeding after menopause make medical review more useful.

Write down the last period, the day spotting began, its colour and amount, and whether it followed sex or a missed contraceptive dose. Note cramps, pelvic pain, discharge, fever, urinary symptoms, and pregnancy possibility. Take a pregnancy test when appropriate and follow the instructions. Arrange a routine appointment if spotting returns, lasts beyond a short episode, or is unusual for you. The clinician may review medicines and contraception, examine the cervix, and test for infection.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, faintness, confusion, fever, or profound weakness. If pregnancy is possible, pain with dizziness, fainting, shoulder pain, or heavier bleeding needs prompt assessment. Seek timely review for postmenopausal bleeding or recurring bleeding between periods, even when each episode is light.
