Spotting on the day your period is due when pregnant

Light spotting near an expected period may occur as early pregnancy develops, but it can also be unrelated bleeding between periods. A pregnancy test can help establish whether pregnancy is present, although testing too early may not give a clear answer. Note whether the bleeding stays light, becomes a period-like flow, or stops.

Pregnancy-related bleeding can be a presentation of early pregnancy loss or an ectopic pregnancy. The bleeding symptom does not identify either condition. Cervical irritation, infection such as Chlamydia, and other causes of bleeding between periods are also possible.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat it or seek clinical advice if the result is unclear and bleeding continues. Contact a pregnancy care professional about bleeding after a positive test. Record the date, amount, colour, cramps, and any one-sided pain.

Use a pad or liner to observe the flow and avoid tampons while the cause is being assessed. Do not take or stop medicines without checking their suitability if you may be pregnant. A clinician may advise an examination, blood tests, or ultrasound depending on symptoms and timing.

Seek emergency care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, significant dizziness, heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, or marked weakness. Fever, worsening pelvic pain, or passing tissue also needs prompt assessment.

Ask when to repeat a pregnancy test, whether you need blood tests or an ultrasound, and which symptoms should send you to emergency care. If the test is negative, ask how long to monitor the spotting before arranging a review.
