Spotting the morning after intercourse: what to know

Friction, dryness, a small surface injury, or cervical sensitivity may leave a little blood noticed later. Bleeding after sex can also occur with an infection, cervical dysplasia, polyps, or other changes in the cervix or womb. Pregnancy-related bleeding is another possibility when pregnancy can occur. The timing suggests a relationship to intercourse but does not prove the cause, and one episode cannot distinguish irritation from a condition needing treatment.

Pause penetrative sex until bleeding and tenderness settle, and avoid inserting products that may irritate the area. Note the amount, colour, pain, discharge, and whether bleeding happens again after sex. Arrange a review if the episode recurs, follows a new partner, or comes with pain or discharge. A clinician may offer pregnancy and infection tests and examine the vagina and cervix; keep cervical screening appointments up to date.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. Get prompt medical advice for foul-smelling discharge, sores, pain during urination, or bleeding that continues. These features call for assessment because they can change the next step.

Ask whether dryness, irritation, contraception, infection, or cervical changes could explain the episode; whether testing is needed; and whether you should avoid sex until results are available. Ask when recurrent post-sex bleeding needs examination even if each episode is light.
