What Spotting in Early Pregnancy Can Mean

Spotting means a small amount of blood, often noticed on toilet paper or underwear. It may look pink, red, or brown; brown blood is often older blood. Light bleeding can occur when the cervix is more sensitive, including after sex or an internal examination. Bleeding can also occur around the time a pregnancy attaches to the womb, although bleeding alone cannot confirm why it happened.

Spotting does not by itself show whether a pregnancy is developing normally. It can occur in pregnancies that continue, but it can also be an early sign of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the womb and can become an emergency, especially when bleeding is accompanied by one-sided lower-abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting.

A healthcare professional may ask about the timing, colour, amount, pain, and any previous pregnancy problems. They may recommend an examination, pregnancy hormone blood tests, or an ultrasound depending on how far along the pregnancy is and your symptoms.

Contact your maternity service, obstetrician, gynaecologist, or another qualified clinician to report any bleeding during pregnancy. Note when it began, whether it is getting heavier, its colour, and whether clots or tissue are present. Use a pad rather than a tampon so the amount is easier to observe, and avoid inserting anything into the vagina until you have received advice.

Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell. A clinician can decide whether you need monitoring, blood tests, or an ultrasound. If you have a history of ectopic pregnancy, fertility treatment, or a pregnancy with an intrauterine device, mention it when you call.

Seek emergency care now for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Even without these warning signs, arrange prompt medical advice for repeated spotting, bleeding after sex, or any bleeding that concerns you. Bleeding between periods outside pregnancy has a separate range of causes; persistent symptoms may need assessment for conditions such as Chlamydia, Endometrial Polyps, or Uterine Fibroids.
