What should you know about spotting from implantation?

Some people notice pink, brown, or lightly red staining near the time a period is expected. The timing can overlap with hormonal changes or the beginning of a period, so appearance alone cannot identify implantation. Bleeding may also come from the cervix, an infection, contraception, a polyp, or another uterine condition. A bleeding symptom is not the same as a diagnosis; cervical cancer, for example, is one condition that can present with abnormal bleeding, while many other explanations are non-cancerous.

Pregnancy testing is more useful than trying to interpret the colour of spotting. If a test is negative but your period does not arrive, repeat it according to the test instructions or arrange clinical advice.

Note when the spotting started, its colour, how much reaches a liner, and whether it stops. Consider a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina while bleeding if that worsens discomfort, and seek advice about medicines rather than starting treatment based on the spotting alone. Get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or feeling very unwell, especially if pregnancy is possible. Contact a clinician promptly for repeated bleeding, bleeding with fever or unusual discharge, or bleeding that continues or returns. These warning signs need assessment because urgent causes cannot be ruled out from the amount of spotting alone.
