Spotting for the first time

Spotting means a small amount of vaginal bleeding outside an expected period. It can follow ovulation, hormonal changes, a new contraceptive method, sex, or irritation. It can also occur with infection, pregnancy, a cervical polyp, or a fibroid, so the first episode cannot be diagnosed by appearance alone.

Chlamydia may cause bleeding between periods or after sex, sometimes with discharge, urinary burning, or pelvic pain. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer are less common possibilities that clinicians may consider when bleeding is unexplained, recurrent, or linked with sex. These conditions are not identified simply because spotting has occurred.

Note the day, colour, amount, trigger, and any pain or discharge. Consider pregnancy testing if pregnancy is possible, especially if a period is late.
