Spotting During Periods: What Should You Know?

Menstrual flow can vary from cycle to cycle. Light pink or brown staining at the beginning or end of a period may be older blood or a temporarily lighter lining. Write down when the staining begins, how many pads or liners you use, whether clots occur, and any pain or pregnancy possibility. A single mild variation may settle, while a recurring change needs review.

Use a cycle diary for the next episodes and note contraception, missed doses, medicines, recent sex, and associated symptoms. If pregnancy is possible, check with a pregnancy test and share the result with a healthcare professional. Book an appointment when the change persists, repeats, or affects daily life. Assessment may include questions about your cycle, an examination, infection testing, or imaging depending on your age, history, and symptoms.

Get urgent care for rapidly increasing bleeding, faintness, marked weakness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding with a positive pregnancy test. Seek prompt advice too if bleeding starts after menopause or appears after sex repeatedly. These patterns need timely assessment even when the amount first seemed small.
