Spotting During Implantation: What to Know

Implantation spotting is a term used for light bleeding near the time a fertilised egg may attach to the womb lining. Bleeding at this stage can look like pink, brown, or red staining. However, the appearance and timing cannot confirm implantation or distinguish it from the start of a period or another cause.

The cervix may bleed after sex, and infections or other gynaecological conditions can also cause bleeding. If pregnancy is possible, a pregnancy test taken at the right time and clinical advice are more useful than trying to identify a cause from colour alone.

Record the day the bleeding began, its colour, whether it is only on wiping or reaches a pad, and any cramps or pelvic pain. If your period is late, follow the test instructions and repeat testing or seek advice if the result is unclear.

Contact a healthcare professional if bleeding continues, returns, or occurs after a positive test. Use a pad to monitor flow, avoid inserting products into the vagina while bleeding, and check before taking medicines if pregnancy is possible.

Get urgent medical help if the bleeding becomes heavy or rapidly increases, or if you have severe or one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, strong dizziness, fever, or unusual weakness. Those features require assessment rather than watchful waiting.

Ask when a pregnancy test is most useful, whether your symptoms need an examination, how to monitor the bleeding, and what changes require urgent help. Tell the clinician about your cycle dates, contraception, pregnancy-test results, pain, recent sex or examination, and medicines.
