Spotting That Comes and Goes in Early Pregnancy

Light pink, red, or brown marks may come from the cervix, which can become more sensitive during pregnancy. Irritation after sex or an examination can also cause a small amount of blood. Spotting can also occur around the time a period was expected. These patterns do not confirm whether a pregnancy is developing normally.

Bleeding may also be linked to infection, a pregnancy complication, or a problem outside the pregnancy. A clinician may ask about the colour, amount, timing, pain, and pregnancy history, then arrange an examination, pregnancy testing, blood tests, or an ultrasound when appropriate. Bleeding between periods has other possible causes, including polyps, fibroids, and cervical conditions.

Use a pad rather than a tampon so you can see whether the bleeding is increasing. Note when each episode starts, its colour, whether clots appear, and any cramps or one-sided pain. Avoid vaginal products until you have advice, and contact your maternity or gynaecology service for guidance even if the spotting stops. Bring the date of your last period and any pregnancy test result.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling suddenly unwell. These symptoms require assessment because bleeding in pregnancy can sometimes signal a time-sensitive complication. If the spotting persists, returns repeatedly, or follows sex, arrange a clinical review.

Ask what amount of bleeding should trigger a call, whether you need an ultrasound or blood test, and which pain medicines are suitable in pregnancy. You can also ask whether infection testing or a pelvic examination is needed.
