Spotting Between Periods: What Brownish Colour Can Mean

Blood can look brown when it takes longer to leave the vagina and becomes exposed to air. A small amount may appear at the beginning or end of a period, around ovulation, after sex, or after a change in hormonal contraception. Missed contraception can also disturb the usual pattern.

Brown spotting can also occur with irritation of the cervix, a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia, pregnancy-related bleeding, or growths such as endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with bleeding between periods, although colour alone cannot identify the cause. Womb cancer may present with unusual bleeding, particularly when bleeding starts after menopause.

The timing, amount, duration, pregnancy possibility, pain, discharge, and any recent medication or contraception change help a clinician decide what checks are appropriate.

Record when the spotting starts, how long it lasts, whether it is only on wiping or needs a pad, and whether it follows sex or a missed contraceptive dose. Note cramps, pelvic pain, unusual discharge, fever, dizziness, or a possible pregnancy.

Arrange a medical appointment if the spotting keeps returning, lasts beyond your usual pattern, happens after sex, or is accompanied by pain or unusual discharge. A clinician may discuss a pregnancy test, infection testing, an examination, or imaging based on your symptoms and stage of life. Do not stop prescribed contraception without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding with severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. If you could be pregnant, bleeding with pain or light-headedness needs prompt assessment because pregnancy-related problems can require urgent treatment.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if bleeding becomes heavy, occurs after menopause, or follows sex repeatedly. These patterns do not diagnose cancer, but they should not be ignored; cervical cancer and womb cancer can present with unusual vaginal bleeding.
