Spotting Before a Period When Pregnant

Spotting before an expected period may be caused by a sensitive cervix, particularly after sex or an examination. Other possibilities include an early-pregnancy change, infection, or a complication. Some people have no clear cause found at first. The fact that bleeding appears before a period would have been due does not distinguish between these explanations.

Tell a clinician about the colour, amount, duration, cramps, and any pain on one side. They may recommend a pregnancy test, hormone blood tests, an examination, or ultrasound according to your symptoms and stage of pregnancy.

Use a pad and observe whether the bleeding stops, increases, or becomes associated with clots. Contact your maternity team, GP, or an urgent-care service for tailored advice. Avoid tampons while the cause is being assessed, and do not take new medicines without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy.

If you have not confirmed pregnancy, test according to the instructions on the home test. Give the clinician the result and the first day of your last period, if known.

Go to urgent care for heavy or worsening bleeding, severe abdominal pain, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or unusual weakness. These warning signs can point to ectopic pregnancy or another condition needing immediate assessment.

Ask whether you need an ultrasound or repeat blood test, how to monitor the bleeding, and which symptoms mean you should go straight to emergency care. Mention recent sex or examination, previous pregnancy problems, medicines, and any infection symptoms.
