Short answer

Spotting at the start of pregnancy can be harmless, but it should be monitored and discussed with a healthcare professional.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Appearance
Pink, brown, or red marks can all be described as spotting.
Track
Record the amount, colour, timing, pain, and any clots.
Urgency
Severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding needs urgent assessment.

What spotting may mean

Spotting means light bleeding, often seen as pink, brown, or red marks on toilet paper or underwear. In early pregnancy, the cervix can bleed more easily because of increased blood flow, including after sex or an examination. Other explanations include changes around implantation, infection, or a pregnancy that needs medical assessment. Bleeding alone cannot show whether a pregnancy is developing normally.

A clinician may ask when the bleeding began, its colour and amount, whether pain is present, and the date of your last period. They may offer pregnancy hormone tests and an ultrasound, depending on how far along the pregnancy may be and your symptoms.

What to do now

Use a pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the amount and colour. Note whether the spotting changes, whether clots appear, and whether cramps or one-sided pain develop. Avoid putting anything into the vagina until a clinician advises you, and arrange prompt advice from your maternity service, GP, or emergency service.

If the bleeding stops, still mention it at your next contact with a pregnancy-care professional. Repeated bleeding outside pregnancy can also be assessed through the guidance on Bleeding Between Periods.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical care for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs rapid assessment, including ectopic pregnancy or significant blood loss. Do not wait for a routine appointment if they occur.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what amount of bleeding should prompt a return visit, whether you need repeat hormone testing or an ultrasound, and which pain medicines are suitable for you. Tell the clinician your blood group if you know it, any previous pregnancy complications, and whether the bleeding followed sex or an examination.

Questions people ask

Is spotting at the start of pregnancy always a miscarriage?

No. Spotting has several possible explanations, and bleeding alone cannot confirm a miscarriage. A clinician uses your symptoms, examination, tests, and sometimes ultrasound to assess what is happening.

Can sex cause early-pregnancy spotting?

The cervix may bleed more easily in pregnancy, so spotting can follow sex or an examination. Contact a healthcare professional if it continues, increases, or occurs with pain.
