Spotting when you are not on your period

Light bleeding between periods may happen around ovulation, after starting or missing hormonal contraception, or after sex. Irritation of the vagina or cervix can also cause it. Infections such as chlamydia may cause bleeding with discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when urinating.

Polyps or fibroids can affect the uterine lining and cause irregular bleeding. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer are less common explanations, but unusual or repeated bleeding deserves assessment. Spotting alone cannot identify its cause.

Record the dates, colour, amount, triggers, cycle timing, contraception, discharge, and pain. Arrange a routine appointment if spotting repeats, follows sex, occurs after menopause, or has no clear explanation. A clinician may discuss a pregnancy test, infection testing, cervical screening history, and an examination.

Use a pad if helpful and avoid douching. If pregnancy is possible, test according to the test instructions and mention the result when you seek advice.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or one-sided pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. Seek prompt advice for bleeding with a positive pregnancy test, or for bleeding after menopause.

Ask what examinations or tests fit your pattern, whether contraception or medicines could contribute, and how to manage another episode. Mention bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or any change from your usual cycle.
