Spotting after two days of your period

Menstrual flow often becomes lighter before stopping, and older blood may look brown. Light bleeding shortly after a period may also follow hormonal contraception, stress, changes in routine or an irregular ovulation pattern.

Other possibilities include cervical irritation, Chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, endometrial polyps or fibroids. Record the first and last day of flow, the colour and amount of spotting, and any cramps, discharge or pain. Continue prescribed medicines and contraception as directed. Arrange a routine review if the pattern repeats, lasts beyond your usual cycle or follows sex.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. A prompt appointment is appropriate for bleeding that is new after a long stable pattern or occurs with unusual discharge.

Ask whether pregnancy or STI testing is needed and whether your medicines or contraception may affect the cycle. Mention recent changes, pain, discharge, sexual activity and any previous cervical screening result.
