Spotting after rough sex

Vigorous penetration can irritate delicate vaginal or cervical tissue, particularly when there was not enough lubrication or when the tissue was already inflamed. A sexually transmitted infection such as Chlamydia can also cause bleeding after sex, with discharge, burning, or pelvic discomfort. Polyps, fibroids, cervical dysplasia, and cervical cancer can present with bleeding after sex or between periods. A recent sexual trigger does not prove that friction is the only cause.

Pause penetration until bleeding and soreness have settled, and avoid inserting products that could further irritate the area. Note how soon the spotting began, how long it lasted, and whether there was pain, dryness, discharge, or an injury. Arrange a clinician review if bleeding happens again, occurs with gentle sex, or is accompanied by infection symptoms. A clinician can discuss examination, sexually transmitted infection testing, and cervical screening when appropriate.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, does not slow, or follows a significant injury, or if you have severe pelvic pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or feeling unwell. Get prompt advice for a positive pregnancy test with bleeding or pain. Consent and safety matter: seek immediate support if the sex was not fully consensual or you feel unsafe.
