Spotting after your period when pregnant

What seems like a period may sometimes be bleeding in early pregnancy, so the timing and amount can be difficult to interpret from appearance alone. A test may be negative if taken too early; a clinician can advise whether it should be repeated. Spotting can also have non-pregnancy causes, including contraception changes, cervical irritation, Chlamydia, polyps, fibroids, or other cervical and womb conditions. Contact a healthcare professional for advice if the result is positive, unclear, or the bleeding continues. Avoid assuming that light bleeding is harmless or that it confirms a pregnancy. Mention contraception, recent sex, medicines, prior pregnancy problems, and infection symptoms during the consultation.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, marked weakness, or heavy bleeding. Bleeding with a positive pregnancy test needs prompt clinical advice, particularly when pain or feeling unwell is present. Emergency assessment may be needed to identify and treat a pregnancy-related problem.
