Is spotting after your period normal?

A brief, light trace near the end of menstruation may be older blood. Spotting can also follow hormonal contraception changes, ovulation, sex, pregnancy, or irritation. Infection may cause bleeding with discharge, pelvic discomfort, or burning when urinating. Polyps and fibroids can affect bleeding from the uterus, while cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and womb cancer are conditions clinicians may consider when bleeding is unexplained or recurrent. The presence of spotting does not tell you which cause applies; an assessment is based on the whole history.

Write down the dates, amount, colour, and any trigger. Note whether you have pain, unusual discharge, fever, dizziness, or bleeding after sex. Check for missed contraception and consider a pregnancy test if relevant. If the spotting is a one-off light trace with no other symptoms, monitor the next cycle while keeping the record. Arrange routine medical advice if it repeats, lasts longer than expected for you, or causes concern. Do not douche or insert products that may irritate the vagina.

Seek urgent care if you have heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pelvic pain, or significant weakness. If pregnancy is possible, urgent assessment is needed for bleeding with one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, or dizziness. Get prompt advice for fever, foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding after menopause. Recurrent spotting after sex also deserves a clinical review.
