Short answer

Dark brown spotting after a period is often older blood leaving the uterus, but repeated bleeding or accompanying pain needs medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the colour may mean

Blood can look brown when it takes longer to leave the vagina and has oxidised. A small amount may appear as staining on underwear or toilet tissue near the end of a period. Spotting can also occur with hormonal changes, contraception, irritation after sex, pregnancy-related changes, or an infection such as Chlamydia. Less common causes include cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, or womb and cervical conditions. A symptom does not identify its cause by itself; a clinician considers timing, pregnancy possibility, medicines, and examination findings.

What to do now

Record when the spotting starts, how long it lasts, its colour, and whether it follows sex or a missed contraceptive dose. Note cramps, unusual discharge, fever, dizziness, or pain during sex. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible, and avoid vaginal douching because it can irritate tissue. Arrange a routine appointment if the spotting recurs, happens after sex, or is new for you. A clinician may discuss a pelvic examination, infection testing, pregnancy testing, or cervical screening depending on your situation.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, offensive discharge, worsening pain, or bleeding after menopause. Recurrent bleeding should be assessed even when the colour is brown, because urgency depends on the amount, associated symptoms, and personal context rather than colour alone.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern relate to contraception, infection, pregnancy, or a change in the cervix or uterus? Which examination or tests are appropriate? Does bleeding after sex change the assessment? What symptoms should prompt urgent care?
