Spotting after a period while using birth control

Hormonal contraception can change the womb lining and alter the timing, amount, or colour of bleeding. Spotting is more likely after starting, changing, missing, or taking a method inconsistently, and it can occur with pills, injections, implants, hormonal coils, or other methods. Emergency contraception can also shift the next bleed. This pattern does not identify the cause by itself.

Bleeding between periods may instead come from pregnancy, an infection such as chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, or another condition affecting the cervix or womb. A method can reduce pregnancy risk without explaining every episode of bleeding.

Check the instructions for your specific method and take or use it exactly as directed. If you missed doses, vomited, started a medicine, or changed contraception, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether you need a pregnancy test or backup protection. Record the dates, amount, and symptoms. Arrange review when spotting lasts, returns across cycles, follows sex, or is worrying you. Do not stop hormonal contraception suddenly without discussing an alternative if pregnancy prevention matters to you.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Seek prompt review for bleeding that is new, keeps returning, follows sex, or comes with unusual discharge or pain when passing urine.

Ask whether your method or dosing pattern could explain the spotting, whether you need pregnancy or infection testing, and whether another contraceptive would suit you better. Ask how long to monitor the pattern and which symptoms need faster care.
