Spotting after ovulation and before a period

Light pink or brown spotting can occur when hormone levels shift around ovulation or before the next period. The cervix may also bleed after sex, and vaginal dryness or irritation can cause a small amount of blood. Other possibilities include chlamydia or another infection, cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, or a change in the womb lining. Ovulation timing is often estimated rather than directly measured, so spotting alone cannot confirm ovulation or pregnancy.

Bleeding between periods is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Its pattern matters: note whether it follows sex, happens in several cycles, becomes heavier, or comes with pain or unusual discharge.

Keep a simple record of cycle dates, suspected ovulation signs, bleeding colour and amount, pain, discharge, and sexual activity. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible and follow the test instructions. Book a clinician review if spotting repeats, persists, or is new for you. The appointment may include a pregnancy check, pelvic examination, infection testing, and a discussion of cervical screening. Do not use leftover antibiotics or hormone medicines.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with bleeding or pain. Prompt review is also needed for bleeding after sex that keeps recurring or discharge with a strong odour.

Ask whether the pattern fits a hormone change, whether pregnancy or infection testing is needed, and whether your cervix or womb lining should be examined. Ask when to return if the spotting continues.
