Spotting after oral sex

Friction from fingers, dental contact, or a toy can cause a small surface injury, especially when lubrication is limited. A sensitive cervix may bleed after contact. Infections such as chlamydia can cause bleeding between periods, discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex, although some infections cause few symptoms. Cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, and womb conditions are also possible explanations. Cervical cancer is an uncommon cause, but bleeding that keeps returning should not be dismissed.

Spotting after oral sex does not by itself show which condition is present. The pattern, examination findings, sexual health history, and screening history help guide the next step.

Pause sexual contact until active bleeding and soreness settle. Avoid inserting products or douching, and use gentle washing only. Arrange a medical appointment if the episode recurs, follows light contact, or comes with discharge, odour, pelvic pain, or urinary symptoms. A clinician may inspect the tissues, offer infection testing, and check whether cervical screening is up to date. Tell them about new partners, barrier use, pregnancy possibility, and medicines that affect bleeding.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. Seek prompt review for bleeding after sex that persists, returns, or occurs after menopause, or when it is accompanied by a smelly discharge.

Ask whether the bleeding looks like surface irritation, whether infection testing or an examination is needed, and when to repeat cervical screening. Ask which symptoms should lead you to seek faster care.
