Spotting after conception

Early pregnancy changes can make the cervix more likely to bleed, particularly after sex or an examination. Light spotting may also occur around the time a period was expected. However, bleeding can accompany a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, so its timing and associated symptoms matter.

Infection, cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, and other causes of bleeding between periods can also produce spotting. Chlamydia is one infection that may cause bleeding, sometimes with discharge or pelvic discomfort. Spotting does not by itself show which condition is present.

If pregnancy has not been confirmed, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and contact a healthcare professional for advice about the result. Note the bleeding colour, amount, clots, pain, and whether it followed sex or activity.

Until you have advice, use pads rather than relying on memory to judge flow, and avoid inserting anything into the vagina if it worsens bleeding or discomfort. A clinician may arrange repeat pregnancy testing, an examination, or an ultrasound depending on symptoms and pregnancy timing.

Get emergency help for severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding that becomes heavy. These symptoms can signal a problem needing immediate treatment, including ectopic pregnancy.

Contact a maternity or medical service promptly for any bleeding in a confirmed pregnancy, especially when it is increasing or accompanied by cramps. Recurrent bleeding after sex also merits review; cervical cancer can present with abnormal bleeding, although spotting does not mean cancer is present.

Ask when to repeat a pregnancy test, whether your symptoms need an ultrasound, and which changes should trigger emergency care. Mention your last menstrual period, pregnancy-test results, previous pregnancies, and any fertility treatment or contraception.
