Spotting after a chemical pregnancy

A chemical pregnancy is an early pregnancy loss detected through a positive test before a pregnancy can be seen on ultrasound. Bleeding may begin around the expected period and can be followed by cramping as the uterine lining sheds. A pregnancy test can remain positive for a while as hormone levels fall, so one result may not show the whole picture.

Bleeding after a positive pregnancy test should not automatically be attributed to a chemical pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy and other causes need consideration if pain, dizziness, or bleeding continues. Cervical irritation, infection, polyps, fibroids, and womb conditions can also cause bleeding between periods, although the timing and symptoms differ.

Use pads or liners to monitor the amount, and record clots, cramping, pain location, fever, and test results. Contact your clinician or pregnancy service to ask whether repeat pregnancy-hormone testing or an examination is needed. Follow their advice about when to test again and when to try for pregnancy.

Rest when needed and seek advice before taking medicines if you could still be pregnant. Emotional reactions can be strong after an early loss; speak with someone you trust or a healthcare professional if you need support.

Get emergency help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or sudden weakness. Prompt assessment matters if a pregnancy location has not been confirmed or symptoms are getting worse.
