Spotting After a Week of Intercourse: What to Know

A small amount of blood can appear when the vaginal tissue or cervix is irritated, especially after frequent or vigorous sex, dryness, or a change in sexual activity. Bleeding between periods can also occur with contraception changes, pregnancy-related changes, or infections. The timing alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice the amount, colour, timing, and whether bleeding follows sex each time. Pain, unusual discharge, odour, itching, burning when urinating, or pelvic discomfort can point toward an infection such as Chlamydia. A cervical growth or surface change, including Cervical Dysplasia, can also present with bleeding after sex. Less commonly, Cervical Cancer or a womb condition can present with bleeding between periods or after intercourse; this symptom does not mean that you have cancer.

If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test according to the test instructions and mention the result to a clinician. Bleeding with one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting needs urgent assessment because pregnancy-related complications can require prompt care.

Pause penetrative sex until the bleeding has stopped and any soreness has settled. Avoid douching and scented products, which can further irritate tissue. Keep a brief record of when the spotting happens, how long it lasts, and any associated symptoms. Arrange a non-urgent appointment if it continues, returns, happens after sex repeatedly, or occurs with discharge or pain.

A clinician may ask about contraception, pregnancy possibility, menstrual timing, and infection exposure. They may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, and recommend cervical screening or other tests based on your history and examination. Possible explanations can include Endometrial Polyps or Uterine Fibroids, which are assessed separately from cervical causes.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. Get prompt advice if you may be pregnant and have bleeding with pain or weakness. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the bleeding follows menopause or is accompanied by a new pelvic mass or persistent pain.

Contact a clinician soon if spotting keeps returning after intercourse, occurs between periods without an obvious explanation, or comes with abnormal discharge, pain during sex, or urinary symptoms. These features can be caused by treatable problems but need an examination to distinguish them.
