Spotting a Year After Menopause: What to Know

After menopause, thinning and dryness of vaginal or cervical tissue can make light bleeding easier to trigger. Polyps, hormone medicines, infection, and pelvic conditions such as Pelvic Organ Prolapse may also contribute. Bleeding can be a presentation of a womb or cervical problem, including cancer, but the symptom does not show which cause is present. It should not be assumed to be a late period or a normal part of Menopause.

Arrange a prompt appointment with a doctor or gynaecology service, even if the spotting has stopped. Record the colour, amount, duration, triggers, pain, discharge, and medicines such as hormone therapy or blood thinners. Assessment may involve a pelvic examination, ultrasound, or a sample from the womb; the clinician will explain which tests fit your symptoms.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or sudden weakness. Do not wait for a routine appointment if bleeding is increasing or you feel acutely unwell.

Ask what examination is needed, whether medicines could contribute, and when results will be available. Mention any vaginal dryness, pain, discharge, prolapse symptoms, or previous bleeding episodes.
