Spotting a Few Days After Sex: What It Can Mean

Light pink, red, or brown marks may appear when delicate tissue is irritated during sex, especially with vaginal dryness or friction. Bleeding can also occur around ovulation, after a change in hormonal contraception, or when the cervix is inflamed.

An infection such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding after sex, sometimes with unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or burning when passing urine. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, womb polyps, and fibroids are less common possibilities that need assessment rather than self-diagnosis. A few days between sex and spotting does not identify the cause by itself.

Note when the spotting started, how long it lasted, its colour, and whether it followed sex, a period, or a missed contraceptive dose. Record pain, discharge, fever, dizziness, or urinary symptoms as well. Use a pad if needed so you can observe the amount, and avoid vaginal products that irritate the area.

Arrange an appointment if the bleeding returns, continues, happens after sex more than once, or occurs with discharge or pelvic pain. A clinician may ask about pregnancy possibility, contraception, periods, infection risk, and screening history, then decide whether an examination or tests are appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or rapidly increasing, or if it comes with severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with pain or dizziness needs prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous.

Do not wait for a routine appointment when these warning signs occur. Even without urgent symptoms, bleeding after sex that is new, recurrent, or occurring after menopause should be checked by a healthcare professional.
