Spotting 1 Week After Sex: What to Know

Short answer
Spotting 1 week after sex can reflect cycle-related bleeding, irritation, infection, or another cause, so the interval alone cannot identify the reason; arrange care if it repeats or concerns you.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Timing
- One week after sexual contact
- Key context
- Cycle timing, pain, discharge, contraception, and pregnancy possibility
- Review
- Repeated or unexplained spotting warrants assessment
What the timing tells you
A week between sex and spotting does not prove that sex caused the bleeding. The spotting may line up with ovulation or the start of a period, or it may follow hormonal contraception changes. Cervical irritation can be delayed in notice, and Chlamydia may cause bleeding, discharge, pelvic pain, or urinary symptoms. Endometrial polyps, uterine fibroids, cervical dysplasia, womb cancer, and cervical cancer can present with abnormal bleeding; spotting is not enough to identify any of these conditions.
A clinician will consider your cycle, pregnancy possibility, sexual health, contraception, pain, discharge, and whether bleeding happens after other episodes of sex or between periods. Examination and appropriate testing can locate the source.
How to respond
Write down the date of sex, the date and amount of spotting, cycle timing, and any accompanying symptoms. Arrange a routine appointment if the bleeding returns, continues, occurs after menopause, or is associated with pain or discharge. Consider infection testing if there is a new partner or concern about exposure. Avoid sex that causes pain or bleeding while waiting for advice.
When care is urgent
Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, fever, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. Prompt review is appropriate for repeated post-sex bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or foul-smelling discharge. The presence of warning symptoms matters more than the one-week interval.
Useful questions
Could this be cycle-related, an infection, or a cervical or uterine cause? Do I need an examination, pregnancy test, or infection testing? Is my screening current? What changes should lead me to urgent care?

Questions people ask
Does spotting a week later mean sex caused it?
Not necessarily. The bleeding may be cycle-related or have another cause, so timing alone cannot establish a connection.
Can an infection cause spotting?
Yes. Chlamydia and other pelvic or cervical problems may cause bleeding with discharge, pain, or urinary symptoms and need appropriate testing.
