Short answer

Soy milk can suit lactose intolerance because it contains no lactose, but check nutrition and allergy considerations.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why soy milk may help

Lactose is the natural sugar in cow's milk and some other dairy products. When the small intestine makes too little lactase, lactose can reach the colon and cause abdominal pain, bloating, gas, or diarrhoea. Soy milk does not contain lactose, so replacing dairy milk with it may reduce symptoms for someone whose symptoms are truly due to lactose.

Not every digestive reaction to milk is lactose intolerance. Milk protein allergy, irritable bowel symptoms, or another condition can feel similar. Soy can also cause an allergic reaction in some people, so a dairy-free choice is not automatically suitable for everyone.

Choosing and using soy milk

Compare labels and choose a product that suits your diet, such as an unsweetened option fortified with calcium and vitamin D. Check protein content if soy milk is replacing milk regularly, and include other reliable sources of protein and calcium in meals.

Try a small serving if you have never had soy and monitor for rash, swelling, vomiting, or breathing symptoms. If symptoms continue despite avoiding lactose, a clinician can discuss Food Intolerance Testing or another assessment. Nutrition Counselling can help maintain a balanced diet during food changes.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or throat, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or repeated vomiting after soy. Arrange medical advice for persistent diarrhoea, weight loss, blood in stool, night symptoms, or pain that is severe or worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit Lactose Intolerance, how to meet calcium needs, whether soy is appropriate for you, and whether another diagnosis should be considered.
