Sound wave therapy for gallstones: what should you know?

Extracorporeal shock-wave treatment directs energy through the skin towards selected stones, aiming to fragment them. The small pieces may then pass through the bile ducts, sometimes with prescribed medicine to reduce new stone formation. Imaging is needed to assess stone size, number, location, the gallbladder, and the bile ducts. If fragments block a duct, pain, jaundice, or inflammation can occur.

Surgery to remove the gallbladder is often considered when stones cause repeated symptoms or complications. Sound waves are not the same as ultrasound imaging, and they do not treat every type of gallstone or an inflamed or obstructed gallbladder.

Arrange a GP consultation or specialist assessment before pursuing treatment. Describe episodes of abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, or vomiting, including their timing and relationship to meals. Do not rely on online remedies to dissolve stones. Follow the care team's instructions about imaging, medicines, eating before treatment, and follow-up scans. Ask how recurrence or retained fragments would be monitored.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, repeated vomiting, faintness, or worsening illness. These signs can indicate an obstructed bile duct, gallbladder inflammation, or pancreatitis. Prompt assessment matters even when a previous scan showed gallstones without symptoms.

Ask whether your stones are suitable for shock-wave treatment, how fragments will leave the body, what alternatives exist, how complications would be recognised, and what follow-up is planned.
