Sore throat when swallowing

A Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19 may inflame the throat and cause cough or congestion. Strep Throat and Tonsillitis can make swallowing particularly painful and may cause swollen tonsils or neck glands. Allergic Rhinitis can produce drainage that irritates the throat. Acid Reflux may cause burning, hoarseness, or a lump-like feeling, often after eating or overnight. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause, and the absence or presence of fever does not settle the diagnosis.

Sip water or warm fluids, eat soft foods, and avoid smoke, alcohol, and very spicy foods while the throat is irritated. Rest your voice and use a humidifier if dry air makes the discomfort worse. Check medicine labels carefully, and ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief if you have chronic illness, take regular medicines, or are pregnant. Do not share prescribed antibiotics or start leftover tablets.

Get prompt medical advice if pain is worsening, lasts several days, keeps returning, or prevents normal drinking. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, or dehydration. A clinician may inspect the throat and arrange a swab when the findings suggest a bacterial infection.
