Sore throat signs and symptoms

Throat discomfort may feel raw, burning, tight or painful when you swallow. You might notice a dry cough, hoarse voice, unpleasant breath, swollen neck glands, fever or tiredness. A runny nose and sneezing can accompany the Common Cold or Allergic Rhinitis. Influenza and COVID-19 may add fever, aches, fatigue or cough. Strep Throat can present with a very painful throat, fever and tender neck glands, while Tonsillitis may cause enlarged or coated tonsils. Glandular Fever can cause throat pain with significant tiredness and swollen glands. Acid Reflux may cause burning, throat clearing or a sour taste.

Drink regularly, rest, and select soft foods or soothing warm and cool drinks. Avoid smoke and anything that clearly worsens the irritation. Consider checking your temperature and noting when symptoms began, whether swallowing is becoming harder, and whether you have been exposed to someone unwell. A pharmacist can recommend suitable symptom relief after checking your age, medicines and health conditions. Keep fluids available and take small sips if swallowing is uncomfortable.

Call for emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, or have swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek prompt assessment for severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, dehydration, confusion, or a rash with fever. Arrange a medical review if symptoms are worsening, repeatedly returning, or stopping you from eating and drinking. A clinician can inspect the throat and decide whether a test or treatment is appropriate.
