Choosing a remedy
Most short-lived throat discomfort accompanies an upper-airway illness, but the right approach depends on the pattern. A runny nose and cough can fit the Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19. Swollen tonsils, fever and pain when swallowing may occur with Tonsillitis or Strep Throat. Glandular Fever can bring a sore throat with pronounced tiredness and swollen glands. Allergic Rhinitis may cause irritation from mucus draining into the throat, while Acid Reflux can cause burning or a sour taste. Remedies ease symptoms; they do not establish which condition is responsible.
Ways to ease discomfort
Sip water or another non-irritating drink often. Warm broth, cool drinks, ice lollies and soft foods may make swallowing more comfortable. Rest your voice and avoid smoking, dusty air and very spicy foods if they aggravate you. Gargling with warm salty water may soothe some adults who can gargle safely without swallowing it. Ask a pharmacist about pain relief or throat lozenges, and read labels carefully so you do not double up ingredients in combination products. Antibiotics are not a general sore-throat remedy and should only be used when prescribed.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, swelling inside the mouth or throat, or a rapidly changing voice. Arrange prompt care for dehydration, severe weakness, a rash with fever, or severe pain on one side. Contact a clinician when the illness is worsening rather than easing, keeps recurring, or makes eating and drinking difficult. Mention any immune problem, pregnancy, or regular medicines when asking for treatment advice.

No. Many sore throats are not treated with antibiotics; a clinician decides when they are appropriate.
