Sore throat that is painful to swallow

Viruses such as a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 can irritate the throat and make each swallow sting. Tonsillitis and Strep Throat may cause stronger pain, swollen tonsils, fever or tender neck glands. Glandular Fever can produce marked throat discomfort and tiredness.

Dry air, mouth breathing, Allergic Rhinitis or Acid Reflux may also irritate the lining. Painful swallowing is different from being unable to swallow: the latter is a warning sign, especially if saliva cannot be managed.

Take frequent sips of water and try cool or warm fluids according to what feels soothing. Soft foods, rest and avoiding smoke can reduce irritation. An adult may try a warm salt-water gargle, but children should not gargle unsupervised. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief and whether a throat product is appropriate for your age and health.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have breathing difficulty, drooling, a muffled voice, sudden neck or mouth swelling, or severe trouble opening your mouth. These features can signal significant swelling or a deeper infection.

Contact a clinician promptly for high fever, pus on the tonsils, a widespread rash, dehydration, severe one-sided pain or symptoms that are worsening. Arrange review if the sore throat is not settling or repeatedly returns; examination and a throat test may be needed.
