What a sore throat may look like

The back of the throat may appear pinker or redder than usual, and the tonsils may look enlarged. Small spots, streaks of mucus, or a white coating can occur with several different conditions, including viral illness, tonsillitis, and strep throat. A normal-looking throat does not exclude irritation or infection.

A dry, scratchy appearance can follow mouth breathing, allergies, smoke, or dehydration. Reflux may irritate the throat without causing obvious coating. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or glandular fever can also cause throat symptoms, with other features varying from person to person.

Use good lighting and a mirror if you want to observe changes, but do not scrape the tonsils or put objects deep in the mouth. Drink regularly, choose soft foods, and try warm or cool fluids according to what feels soothing. Avoid smoke and share no cups or utensils while an infection is possible.

Record when the appearance changed and note pain, cough, nasal symptoms, swollen neck glands, rash, or difficulty swallowing. A clinician may inspect the throat and decide whether a swab or another test is appropriate.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, drooling because you cannot swallow, rapidly increasing mouth or neck swelling, severe dehydration, or an inability to open the mouth normally. Arrange a medical review if the pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, or the coating persists with significant illness.
