Sore throat and Hodgkin lymphoma

Hodgkin lymphoma is a disease of the lymphatic system. When it affects the neck, a person may notice a persistent, usually painless swelling rather than a brief sore throat alone. Sore throat can occur alongside many more common problems, including a common cold, strep throat, tonsillitis, influenza, COVID-19, glandular fever, allergies, or acid reflux. A sore throat symptom cannot determine whether lymphoma is present, and the symptom does not make lymphoma likely. A clinician considers the whole pattern, including duration, examination findings, swollen glands, night sweats, unexplained weight change, or ongoing tiredness.

For a recent sore throat, rest, drink fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke. Use pain relief only as directed on the label or by a pharmacist who knows your medical history. Make a routine appointment if the throat problem is not improving, keeps returning, or comes with a neck lump or other persistent change. Take a short symptom record, including when it started, whether the lump is painful, and any changes in swallowing or voice.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, severe weakness, or confusion. Arrange a prompt medical review for a persistent painless neck swelling, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, ongoing fever, or fatigue that is affecting daily activities. These findings have several possible causes; they call for examination rather than a conclusion based on a sore throat.
