Sore throat for 3 months and cancer: what to know

Long-lasting throat pain can follow acid reflux, allergies with post-nasal drip, ongoing irritation from smoke or voice strain, or a condition affecting the tonsils or throat. Some infections can also persist or recur. Cancer is one possibility a clinician may consider, but a sore throat is not a diagnosis and most explanations require examination rather than guesswork.

A clinician may inspect the mouth and throat, feel the neck, review smoking or alcohol exposure, ask about reflux and assess voice changes. Hoarseness, a neck lump, one-sided pain, ear pain, bleeding, unexplained weight change or increasing difficulty swallowing are especially useful details to report.

Arrange a medical appointment soon and write down when the symptom began, whether it is constant, and what makes it better or worse. Bring a list of medicines and mention reflux, allergies, smoking, vaping and voice use. Avoid smoke and vaping while waiting, stay hydrated and do not delay assessment by repeatedly trying leftover medicines.

Seek urgent help if you cannot breathe or swallow fluids, are drooling, have rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, or develop sudden severe symptoms. Otherwise, a three-month sore throat warrants a prompt appointment even when there is no fever, because persistence itself should be examined.

Ask what findings could explain the soreness, whether reflux or post-nasal drip is contributing, and whether you need testing or referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Ask which changes should be treated as urgent while you wait.
