Sore throat for 3 days: what to know

Common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis and strep throat can all cause throat pain during the early days of illness. A blocked or runny nose may lead to mouth breathing and dryness, while allergies or reflux can also irritate the throat. Cough, hoarseness and a runny nose often occur with viral illness; swollen tonsils, tender neck glands or marked pain on swallowing can occur with tonsillitis or strep throat.

Symptoms can overlap, and three days is not enough to identify the cause from timing alone. Improvement, new symptoms and your health history help determine whether an examination or test is useful.

Drink regularly, rest, choose soft foods and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Warm liquids or appropriately used lozenges may ease discomfort. For pain or fever medicine, follow the package directions and ask a pharmacist if you have a chronic illness, take other medicines or are caring for a child. Keep some distance from others if you have respiratory symptoms and wash your hands.

Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, confusion or rapidly worsening throat or neck swelling. Contact a clinician if pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, you become dehydrated, or the sore throat continues without improvement beyond the expected short illness.
