Sore throat for 2 weeks without fever: what to know

A lingering viral illness, post-nasal drip from allergic rhinitis, dry air, smoke or voice strain can irritate the throat without causing fever. Acid reflux can also bring stomach contents towards the throat, leading to soreness, throat clearing, hoarseness or a sour taste, sometimes without typical heartburn. Tonsillitis or strep throat remain possible, particularly when there are swollen tonsils, tender neck glands or pain when swallowing.

The duration matters because a clinician may need to inspect your mouth and throat, feel the neck and review medicines, allergies, reflux symptoms and exposure to irritants. Persistent symptoms do not by themselves identify a single condition.

Keep hydrated, use warm drinks, avoid smoking and vaping, and rest your voice. A humidified room may feel more comfortable when the air is dry. If reflux seems possible, note whether symptoms follow meals or worsen when lying down, then discuss suitable changes with a pharmacist or clinician. Use throat lozenges only as directed and check before taking pain medicine if you have medical conditions or regular medicines.

Book a medical review because the soreness has continued for two weeks, especially if it is one-sided, recurrent, associated with hoarseness, neck swelling, weight change, blood, ear pain or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling or rapidly increasing swelling.

Ask whether reflux, post-nasal drip, an infection or an irritant could explain the pattern. Ask whether you need a throat examination, swab or referral, and which symptoms should trigger faster care.
