Sore throat and congestion without fever

Nasal congestion can make you breathe through your mouth, drying and irritating the throat. A Common Cold may cause blocked or runny nasal passages without a raised temperature. Allergic Rhinitis can cause congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, and throat irritation, especially after exposure to a trigger. Acid Reflux may cause a sore or scratchy throat without nasal symptoms. COVID-19, Influenza, Strep Throat, Tonsillitis, or Glandular Fever can also occur without fever, so the full pattern and its course matter more than temperature alone.

Drink regularly, use warm fluids if soothing, and rest. Saline nasal spray or a humidified room may ease blocked passages. Avoid smoke and strong fragrances. A pharmacist can advise on an appropriate nasal treatment or pain relief, particularly if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, are pregnant, or take other medicines. Consider testing or medical advice if you have a known exposure to a contagious illness.

Get urgent help if congestion or throat swelling is accompanied by breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, confusion, or severe weakness. Arrange a medical review if symptoms are worsening, last longer than expected, keep returning, or make drinking difficult. New severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, or a persistent one-sided throat problem also warrants assessment.
