Sore throat, burning eyes and fatigue: what to know

Short answer
A sore throat with burning eyes and fatigue often reflects a viral illness, allergy or irritation, so track the pattern and your overall condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common patterns
- Infection, allergy or irritant exposure
- Helpful clue
- Itchy eyes suggest allergy; marked tiredness may accompany infection
- Urgent sign
- Breathing difficulty or inability to swallow saliva
What this combination can mean
A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 can cause throat discomfort and tiredness; some people also develop eye irritation. Allergic rhinitis may cause itchy or burning eyes, a blocked or runny nose and throat irritation from drainage. Smoke, dry air and strong fragrances can irritate the eyes and throat without causing an infection. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down, but it does not usually explain burning eyes. Glandular fever can cause marked tiredness and a sore throat that persists. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.
What you can do today
Rest, drink fluids regularly and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Warm drinks, cool liquids or lozenges may soothe the throat. Avoid smoking and smoky rooms, and reduce exposure to dust, perfume and other triggers. Wash your hands and avoid sharing cups while you are unwell. A pharmacist can advise whether a suitable pain reliever or allergy treatment fits your health history; follow the label and do not combine products with the same ingredient.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, unusual drowsiness, or swelling around the eye. Arrange medical assessment if symptoms are worsening, fatigue is severe, eye pain or vision changes develop, or the sore throat is not settling. Ask about testing for respiratory infections if you have relevant exposure or need to protect someone vulnerable.
Questions for your doctor
Could allergies, reflux or an infection better explain this pattern? Do my eyes need examination? Should I test for a respiratory infection, and which treatments are appropriate with my existing medicines?

Questions people ask
Can allergies cause a sore throat and burning eyes?
Yes. Nasal drainage and inflamed, itchy eyes can irritate the throat, particularly after exposure to a trigger.
Does fatigue mean I have influenza?
Fatigue can occur with influenza, but it also occurs with other infections, poor sleep, allergies and several non-infectious problems.
