Sore throat and tiredness: what to know

Short answer
A sore throat with tiredness often reflects a viral illness, although other causes are possible and your accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Sore throat plus reduced energy can occur with respiratory infections.
- Track
- Fever, swallowing, breathing, swollen glands and symptom duration.
What this combination can mean
A Common Cold may cause throat irritation, blocked or runny nose, cough and reduced energy. Influenza can bring a more abrupt illness with fever, chills, headache and marked fatigue. COVID-19 can also present with sore throat and tiredness, sometimes with cough or changes in smell or taste.
Glandular Fever is another cause of prolonged tiredness with a sore throat and swollen glands. Strep Throat and Tonsillitis may cause painful swallowing, fever or visible changes on the tonsils. Acid Reflux and Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the throat, but they do not usually explain a strong flu-like feeling.
What you can do now
Rest, drink regularly and choose soft foods or warm fluids if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Check your temperature and note when the tiredness began, whether symptoms are improving, and whether anyone around you is unwell.
A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief for your age, health conditions and medicines. Do not share antibiotics or start leftover tablets; antibiotics do not treat viral illnesses. Consider staying home from close contact while you feel acutely unwell, especially if fever or a respiratory symptom is present.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow fluids, saliva is pooling, your voice becomes unusually muffled, or swelling in the mouth or neck is worsening. Arrange medical advice if the sore throat is severe, symptoms are getting worse, fever persists, or tiredness is unusually intense or continues after the throat improves.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit a viral infection, Strep Throat, Tonsillitis or Glandular Fever; whether testing is useful; which pain medicines are safe for you; and how long to rest before returning to work, school or exercise.
