Sore throat and sneezing: what should you know?

Sneezing usually reflects irritation inside the nose. Mucus draining towards the throat can make the throat feel scratchy, while a viral respiratory infection can inflame both areas. Allergic rhinitis may bring repeated sneezing, an itchy or watery nose and throat irritation without making you feel generally unwell. A common cold can add blocked or runny nose, cough and tiredness. Influenza and COVID-19 can also include throat symptoms, with fever, body aches or marked fatigue sometimes providing extra clues. A sore throat is a presentation of strep throat or tonsillitis in some people, but sneezing points more towards nasal irritation than a bacterial throat infection.

Drink fluids regularly and choose warm or cool drinks according to what feels soothing. Rest your voice, avoid cigarette smoke and use a humidified room if dry air worsens the irritation. Saline nasal spray or rinsing can help clear mucus; follow product directions and use safe, prepared water for any nasal rinse. Wash your hands and avoid sharing cups while you have respiratory symptoms. A pharmacist can discuss suitable pain relief or allergy treatment, taking your age, pregnancy status and other medicines into account. Antibiotics do not treat viral colds or allergies.

Seek urgent help if breathing becomes difficult, you cannot swallow fluids, saliva is pooling, or swelling in the mouth or neck is rapidly increasing. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, keep worsening, recur often, or do not begin improving after several days. Contact a clinician sooner if you have a weakened immune system, significant long-term illness, or symptoms such as persistent high fever, chest pain, confusion or dehydration. A clinician may examine your throat and nose and decide whether testing is needed.
