Sore throat and itchy ears: what should you know?

Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the nose, throat and ear area, especially with sneezing, watery eyes or clear nasal discharge. A Common Cold may cause throat soreness and an itchy or blocked ear sensation as congestion affects pressure drainage. Influenza and COVID-19 can also include throat symptoms, usually with broader illness. Strep Throat and Tonsillitis are more likely to cause significant throat pain, fever or painful swallowing than itch alone. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat but is less likely to explain itchy ears. Do not put cotton buds, oils or unprescribed drops into the ear canal.

Sip fluids, rest your voice and use a humidified room if dry air aggravates the throat. Saline nasal rinses may help nasal irritation when prepared and used as directed. A pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine or simple pain reliever suits you. Keep water out of an irritated ear and avoid scratching inside it. If hearing becomes muffled, discharge appears, or pain replaces itch, arrange an examination because the ear may need separate treatment.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a rapidly worsening allergic reaction, severe dizziness, or inability to swallow fluids. Get medical advice for ear discharge, new hearing loss, severe ear pain, persistent fever, or symptoms that do not start improving. A clinician can inspect the ear canal and eardrum and examine the throat rather than assuming both symptoms have one cause.
