Sore throat after antibiotics: what to know

Antibiotics act against particular bacteria, not viruses. If the original illness was viral, throat pain can continue while the infection settles. Even when bacteria are involved, irritated throat tissue may take time to recover. A missed dose, vomiting after a dose, resistance, or a different diagnosis can also explain ongoing symptoms; do not repeat or change treatment without advice.

Dry air, mouth breathing, post-nasal drainage, reflux, smoking, and dehydration can keep the throat uncomfortable. A clinician may check the throat, glands, temperature, hydration, and breathing, and may decide whether testing or a different treatment is appropriate.

Take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed unless the prescriber tells you to stop, and never use leftover medicine. Sip fluids, choose soft foods, rest your voice, and avoid smoke or other irritants. Warm drinks or salt-water gargles may soothe some people. Ask a pharmacist which pain relief is suitable for you, especially if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take other medicines.

Arrange medical advice if the sore throat is not improving, returns after improving, or comes with a new fever, rash, swollen neck glands, or worsening one-sided pain. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, marked swelling, confusion, or signs of severe dehydration. If symptoms began soon after a dose and include facial swelling, wheezing, or widespread hives, treat this as an emergency.

Ask whether the illness still fits a bacterial throat infection, whether a throat test is needed, and how long recovery should take. Tell them the antibiotic name, when you started it, missed doses, allergies, other medicines, and any new symptoms.
