Sore throat 24 hours after kissing

Kissing can expose you to saliva and respiratory droplets, but throat pain the next day can also follow dry air, mouth breathing, reflux, voice strain or an illness that was already starting. A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 may later bring congestion, cough, fever or body aches. Strep throat may cause marked pain with swallowing and fever, while glandular fever can cause pronounced tiredness and swollen glands. A sore throat alone does not identify the infection or prove transmission from a particular person.

Rest, drink fluids and choose soothing foods or drinks. Avoid smoking and sharing drinks while symptoms are present, and wash your hands regularly. Follow label directions for suitable pain relief; ask a pharmacist if you have a long-term condition or take regular medicines. Consider a COVID-19 test if respiratory symptoms develop or local guidance recommends one. Track fever, swallowing, cough, rash and swollen glands over the next few days.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion or rapidly worsening swelling. Arrange medical review for high fever, severe one-sided pain, a rash, persistent symptoms, or marked fatigue with swollen glands.
