What should you know about sore lumps in the throat?

A sore throat may feel rough, swollen, or as if something is stuck. Viral illnesses such as a Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19 can inflame the throat. Tonsillitis may produce enlarged, tender tonsils, while Strep Throat can cause marked pain and fever.

Mucus draining from the nose in Allergic Rhinitis, irritation from Acid Reflux, or swollen glands during Glandular Fever can add a lump-like sensation. The feeling does not identify one cause by itself; the accompanying symptoms and examination matter.

Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and use warm drinks or cool foods according to what feels soothing. Rest your voice, avoid smoke, and wash your hands regularly. Do not share utensils while you have an active respiratory illness.

Note fever, cough, nasal symptoms, a coating on the tonsils, swollen neck glands, reflux symptoms, and how quickly the pain developed. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics; a clinician can decide whether testing or prescription treatment is appropriate.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe one-sided throat pain with difficulty opening the mouth. These signs can indicate airway or deep-tissue problems.

Arrange a medical review for persistent symptoms, repeated episodes, dehydration, a high fever, or a rash. A clinician can inspect the throat and neck and assess whether tonsil infection, reflux, allergy, or another cause is involved.

Ask whether the lumps are enlarged tonsils or neck glands, whether a throat swab is needed, and which symptoms should prompt immediate return. Mention recent illness, reflux, allergies, and any difficulty eating or drinking.
