What should you know about social media and depression?

Short answer

Social media can worsen or reflect depressive symptoms for some people, especially when it disrupts sleep, increases comparison, or replaces support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Online contact can also provide connection. The effect depends on what you view, how often you check, how you feel before and after use, and whether it interferes with ordinary life.

How the pattern may show up

Scrolling may become a way to avoid difficult feelings, while upsetting content or comparison may lower mood. Late-night checking can contribute to difficulty sleeping and daytime sleepiness. Depression commonly presents with low mood or loss of interest, and may also include fatigue, irritability, anxiety, or difficulty concentrating. Social media use by itself does not diagnose depression.

Practical changes

For several days, note when you use social media, what you see, and how your mood and sleep change afterwards. Turn off non-essential notifications, keep the phone away during sleep, and set a gentle stopping point before bed. Unfollow distressing accounts and make room for offline meals, movement, daylight, and direct contact with a trusted person. If low mood or loss of interest continues, book a GP appointment.

When to seek care

Seek professional help when mood changes, withdrawal, sleep problems, or concentration difficulties persist or impair daily life. Get urgent help if you may harm yourself, cannot stay safe, or feel detached from reality. Do not rely on a social media break alone when symptoms are severe; tell a trusted person and contact local emergency services or an urgent mental-health service.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit depression, how sleep and anxiety may be contributing, and which treatments or talking therapies could help. Bring a list of medicines and describe changes in appetite, energy, concentration, sleep, and daily functioning.

Questions people ask

Does social media cause depression?

It is not a single cause for everyone. Use can interact with mood, sleep, stress, isolation, and existing depression.

Should I delete my accounts?

Not necessarily. Reducing triggers, notifications, and late-night use may be more practical; keep supportive connections where they help.
