Smelly Rash Under the Stomach: What to Know

The lower abdominal fold can hold sweat against the skin. Rubbing and softened skin may lead to intertrigo, with redness, soreness, itching, cracks or an odor. Yeast or bacterial overgrowth can add a smell or weeping. Contact dermatitis may follow a new soap, detergent, fabric, adhesive or product. Ringworm can create a scaly, expanding edge, while psoriasis or atopic dermatitis may affect the fold as part of a broader pattern. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Gently wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat the fold completely dry. Change damp clothing promptly and choose loose, breathable fabric. Avoid scrubbing, perfumed products and self-treating with several creams at once, because these can irritate the skin or hide its pattern. Do not share towels. A pharmacist or clinician can help decide whether an antifungal, anti-inflammatory or antibacterial approach fits the appearance; steroid creams can worsen some infections when used without guidance.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, very painful, cracked, draining or not improving with careful drying. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, red streaks, blisters, marked tenderness or feeling unwell. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or poor wound healing should seek advice early. An examination may identify the source and whether a skin swab or other test is useful.
