What should you know about small water blisters on skin?

Blisters form when fluid collects between layers of skin after irritation or inflammation. Itch and tiny grouped blisters on hands or feet can fit dyshidrotic eczema. A rash where skin touched a new soap, adhesive, plant, or cosmetic may fit contact dermatitis. A painful one-sided cluster may occur with shingles, and widespread itchy spots with fever may occur with chickenpox. After intense sun exposure, blistering can be part of sunburn. A clear fluid blister can also follow pressure or friction, so the appearance alone does not settle the cause.

Wash gently with clean water, pat dry, and cover the area with a non-stick dressing. Avoid rubbing, scratching, and deliberately opening the blister. If it breaks, let the fluid drain, keep the loose skin in place, and replace the dressing when wet or dirty. Stop a suspected irritant and avoid sharing towels or clothing. A clinician can decide whether antiviral treatment is appropriate when the pattern suggests a viral infection.

Arrange medical care for increasing redness, heat, swelling, pus, fever, or pain that is getting worse.
